Can You Eat Chocolate When Histamine Intolerant?

Here are some facts about histamine intolerance and chocolate.

  • Chocolate in all forms is listed as a 2 on the SIGHI scale so quite high (cocoa, cocoa powder (chocolate, chocolate drinks, etc.).

  • It is listed in the red zone on our site here.

  • White chocolate is thought by some to be less high in histamine.

  • Some prefer carob over chocolate, but that is also suspect in terms of histamine levels.

Chocolate is one of the hardest foods to cut out when you are histamine intolerant. I don't really ever eat chocolate any more. But once in awhile I think – I'm just going to try a bit of chocolate and see how I feel.

That happened yesterday. Obviously, one bit of chocolate turned into six. I feel fine today although I did have a tell-tale stuffy nose last night.

Worth it for some chocolate although I probably wouldn't do it every day.
