Are oat milks good for histamine intolerance?

Oats seem to be a pretty safe choice for most of us who are histamine intolerant. But oat milk and oat cream might not be as healthy as you think. 🤔⁣

That’s why on our easy-to-use Emoji Based Food List oat milk is listed 🤔yellow - foods that are medium histamine, or where there is debate about histamine levels.

Here are the reasons we’ve decided to rank it as yellow.

Our friends at SIGHI have this to say about oat milks and oat drinks. They say ”Often slightly histamine containing as fermented enzymatically”. And they give it a ranking of “1”.

Then there’s more. Mentioning no names - oat milk is a massive business. But check the ingredients carefully, many contain vegetable oil, a load of preservatives and a method of processing the oats which means it can have a higher GI than sugar (thanks to Dr Anthony Gustin for pointing this out to me). ⁣

All of this definitely won’t help your histamine intolerance.

What have we learnt? ⁣

Stick to simple single ingredient foods where possible, go organic if you can and check labelling. ⁣This stuff is important! when you have histamine intolerance. With any new foods, check our easy-to-use Emoji Based Food List before consuming.

IDEA:

Plenish organic oat milk has 3 ingredients which would appear to be a much better option, so you could try that one first (or an equivalent brand if that’s not available where you are).
