Botox and Histamine Intolerance

Botox and Histamine Intolerance

A weird one this - but today we are talking botox and histamine intolerance.

Inspired by an Instagram follower of mine who emailed to ask if anybody else had experienced symptoms after taking botox. He had his histamine intolerance well under control until he went for a botox injection, then they came roaring back.

Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions. This leads to temporary muscle paralysis and, subsequently (if for cosmetic reasons), a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles.

I’m super sensitive to everything so intrigued to know what you all think and if anybody has experienced this. There are some glimmers of hope.

A study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science in 2017 found that botulinum toxin could suppress the release of inflammatory mediators, including histamine, from human mast cells. Promising!

In addition, chronic urticaria, or hives, is a condition often associated with histamine intolerance. Botox has been used off-label to treat chronic urticaria, with some success. A study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology in 2010 found that patients with chronic urticaria who received Botox injections experienced a significant reduction in the severity and frequency of their symptoms.

OBVIOUSLY none of this is advice. Always consult your doctor. Don’t listen to an idiot like me!
