Is kale a low-histamine vegetable?

Kale is not specifically listed on the SIGHI list which is why many people come to us for an expert opinion.

We’ve decided to place it as a low histamine food on our Food List, and therefore it gets a nice ✅ emoji next to it.

Here’s why…

Kale is one of the vegetables in the brassica family, alongside others such as collard greens, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. As we said, kale is not on the SIGHI list which is one of the most respected lists around. We have therefore consulted our other sources. One source is respected low histamine expert Beth O’Hara.

She lists kale as low-histamine on her food list on her Mast Cell 360 site with a couple of caveats. She notes it’s a) high in oxalates and b) often high in pesticide residue so buy organic.⁣

That’s one of the reasons why Kale = ✅ on our site. Oxalates are clearly an issue with kale, but if those aren’t a proglem, it could be a vegetable that works well for you.

As with all the foods on our Food List, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be tolerated well by everyone - such are the frustrations of histamine intolerance. So here are a few rules if you want to start eating kale as part of your low-histamine diet.

  • Introduce kale slowly.

  • Buy organic kale (an important one)

  • Try a small amount of kale and wait a couple of days. See if it agrees with you. We all react individually which is why it is worth approaching cautiously. Good luck.

One more note on kale. We are shortly going to be running a poll on kale on our instagram page to crowdsource some opinion. We get a huge amount of votes on our food polls over there, so feel free to come and join the instagram page.

Not all veggies and fruits are created equal in this world. ⁣For information on lots of other low histamine foods that you can eat to help you heal from histamine intolerance, check out our Low Histamine Food List.
